A succinct adrenalinegenerating call to clear thinking and rational action. Many historical examples. Incredibly inspiring. | I definitely recommend this book to everyone. | It has helped me to turn problems upsidedown, become the calm within the storm, and even uncover unique opportunities. | I’m enjoying right now. | My life has been beset with obstacles. It takes practice (and pain) to surmount them and achieve success. This author?s book is a howto guide for just that. | My life has been beset with obstacles. It takes practice (and pain) to surmount them and achieve success. This author’s book is a howto guide for just that. | Not kidding on the philosophy of Rory. He's not selling anyone anything, just opening up a little on how he frames his world. "Rory Philosophy" is a useful Google, by summer Friday standards. One of Rory's best book reccos is The Obstacle is the Way which I just finished. | One of my fav books | One of the books that I’ve given away the most lately.

Should I read this?

A brisk, anecdote-driven pep talk drawing on Stoic philosophy and historical figures to argue that obstacles can be turned to advantage. The three-part framework (Perception, Action, Will) is memorable and easy to apply. Each chapter presents a historical figure, a setback, and a lesson, which makes it feel like a series of blog posts stitched together. Useful for a quick motivational boost to reframe a frustrating situation. However, the cherry-picked stories and repetitive phrasing offer little nuance, and you'll likely notice that every figure is sanitized into a one-dimensional hero. It works best as a one-sitting skim, not a deep read.

Read this if...

  • A first-time team lead whose product launch crashed and who needs to reframe the failure as a learning moment before Monday's retrospective.
  • A solo founder who just lost their biggest client and needs tactical resilience advice without wading through startup theory.
  • A commission-based real estate agent in a slow market who needs a mental reset to stop tallying rejections and start seeing each cold call as training.

Skip this if...

  • You'll likely put it down when every chapter follows the same pattern: introduce a historical figure, describe their adversity, and extract a platitude. By the third chapter, the novelty fades and you'll start skimming.
  • Not for you if you're dealing with systemic barriers—racism, chronic health issues—and need advice that acknowledges external limits, not just internal attitude.
  • Annoying if you prefer self-help that includes caveats, acknowledges privilege, or discusses when relentless optimism becomes harmful.

#1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller The Obstacle is the Way has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do. Its many fans include a former governor and movie star (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a hip hop icon (LL Cool J), an Irish tennis pro (James McGee), an NBC sportscaster (Michele Tafoya), and the coaches and players of winning teams like the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Cubs, and University of Texas men’s basketball team. The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things…

Not sure if this is the right fit?

Consider Mindset by Carol S. Dweck. Recommended by 34 sources.

Carol Dweck unpacks the distinction between fixed and growth mindsets, illustrating how beliefs about ability can shape learning, resilience, and achievement. The core idea is instantly applicable—shifting from 'I'm not good at this' to 'I'm not good at this yet'—and Dweck supports it with vivid schoolroom, sports, and boardroom stories. That same accessibility also becomes the book's friction point: the concept gets padded with repetitive case studies, and some readers will chafe at its relentless optimism and reliance on anecdotal evidence.
